Indian nationals living in the UAE may now apply for the new chip-embedded e-passport, but at the same time, there’s a clear message that it is not compulsory to swap your existing passport if it’s still valid.

Current passports still valid

If you hold a regular passport issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India, you can continue using it until its expiry date. The MEA has said that all passports issued will remain valid until they reach the original end date.
According to the MEA: “As and when a respective Passport Office is technically enabled for issuance of ePassport, the citizens applying under that passport office will get the ePassport.” This means that just because the e-passport is available, you are not forced to change right away.

What exactly is the e-passport?

The new version is a hybrid travel doc – combining a normal passport booklet and an embedded electronic chip. Here are the key features:

  • The passport includes a Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna.
  • Biometric and personal details of the holder are stored in the chip.
  • Entry on the cover: you’ll see a small gold-coloured symbol (the chip indicator) on the front cover.
  • The numbering format changes: instead of one letter + seven digits (the old way), the e-passport uses two letters + six digits.
These changes aim to bring the document in line with global standards.

 Top benefits of the e-passport

Using such a document offers clear advantages:

  • Better security: With the data both printed and digitally signed on the chip, it becomes much harder to forge.
  • Faster immigration: Border authorities can authenticate the chip quickly, meaning smoother clearance.
Future Applications Technologies – Innovative software and application development solutions
  • Global compatibility: The technology meets the rules of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which many countries recognise.
Thus, the e-passport is built to support “next-generation travel” where the document itself is smarter.

How to apply from the UAE

If you want to switch to the e-passport, here’s how the process works:

  • Go to the new portal of the Indian Embassy Abu Dhabi (or the Indian Consulate‑General Dubai) online for passport services.
  • Register, log in, fill out the application form, print the form and schedule an appointment at a BLS service centre.
  • Applicants must visit a centre of BLS International (outsourced provider) with required documents.
  • You may upload your photograph and signature (following ICAO-compliant guidelines) in advance to ease the process.
  • If you have only minor corrections, you won’t need to redo the whole application — BLS can make changes already submitted, without extra cost.
These steps are designed to make the switch easier for UAE-based Indian expats.
So, should you change now?

Here are a few points to help you decide:

  • If your current passport is still valid, you don’t have to replace it. The old passport remains legal and acceptable.
  • If you’re applying for a new passport or renewal, you may end up getting the e-passport automatically (depending on the local office).
  • If you travel frequently or worry about security/fraud, switching might give you extra peace of mind.
  • If cost or time is a barrier, you can wait until the natural expiry of your passport, since it remains valid for now.
Why this matters now
  • The Indian government has begun issuing e-passports in a phased rollout across the country and its foreign missions. The UAE missions have entered the pilot phase and are now ready for full implementation.
  • This move reflects global trends of smart travel documents, digital identity systems and improved security for expat communities.
  • Given the large number of Indian expats in the UAE (roughly 4 million as of 2025), the update is especially significant for that community.
Tips for applicants
  • Check photograph rules: Since 1 September 2025, applicants must submit photos that meet ICAO standards — dark-coloured attire, proper background, etc.
  • Gather required documents: For children born on or after 1 October 2023, a government-issued birth certificate is mandatory.
  • Upload documents ahead where possible, to reduce waiting at the BLS centre.
  • If you only need minor edits (e.g., name change, typo correction), note that the new system simplifies that part (no full re-type).

While the e-passport is now live for UAE-based Indian expats, it does not mean immediate replacement for everyone. Many can stay with their current passports — no panic required.
