In a major update for cricket fans, England captain Ben Stokes has announced he will not play in the fifth and final Test match against India due to a shoulder injury. This decision has surprised many but is aimed at avoiding further damage before the upcoming Ashes series in Australia this winter. Stokes said the risk of making the injury worse is too high, and rest is the best option for now.

This development is part of today’s Daily news highlights and brings a few key changes to England’s team as they aim to win the series.

Why Stokes Is Not Playing

  • Stokes hurt his shoulder during the drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford.

  • The fifth Test begins just four days later at The Oval, giving him very little time to recover.

  • He explained the decision by saying, “It’s about risk vs reward—and the risk of playing was too big.”

  • Stokes believes he will only be out for six to seven weeks and will be ready for the Ashes series in November.

Changes in the England Team

With Stokes out, Ollie Pope will now lead the England team as captain. There are also other big changes in the squad:

  1. Jacob Bethell will bat at number six in place of Stokes.

  2. Three new bowlers—Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, and Jamie Overton—will play.

  3. Regulars Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, and Liam Dawson are not playing.

  4. Chris Woakes, aged 36, will play all five matches of the series.

England’s full XI for the final Test includes:
Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope (captain), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton, and Josh Tongue.

Stokes on His Injury and Commitment

During the fourth Test, Stokes bowled a total of 35 overs and was clearly in pain, often touching his shoulder. Still, he said he wouldn’t have changed anything.

“When I’m on the field, I give everything to win. That’s what playing for England means to me,” he said.

Stokes has been in excellent form lately. In the last Test, he took 5 wickets for 72 runs and scored 141 runs, a rare achievement in international cricket.

Concerns for England’s Bowling Attack

Without Stokes, England’s fast bowling looks weaker:

  • Josh Tongue has taken 11 wickets in two Tests.

  • Woakes has taken 10 so far in this series.

  • Jamie Overton hasn’t played much cricket since 2022.

  • Gus Atkinson is returning from a hamstring injury.

There is also no frontline spinner in the team. Part-time spinners Jacob Bethell and Joe Root will fill that role.

India Faces Its Own Challenges

India has not yet confirmed its team, but they are also dealing with injury issues. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant is out with a fractured foot, and top bowler Jasprit Bumrah is expected to be rested after playing the three Tests he was scheduled for.

Expert Opinion: A Worrying Sign

BBC’s chief cricket writer Stephan Shemilt says Stokes’ absence shows how much England relies on him.

“This is a reality check for what England looks like without Stokes,” he said.

There were hopes Stokes might play as just a batter, but coach Brendon McCullum insisted he should not risk his health.

This match is especially important as England leads the series 2-1, and a win here would secure a series victory.

There’s concern about what this injury means for Ben Stokes’ long-term fitness. The next time he’s expected to play is in November in Perth during the Ashes. England fans will now wait anxiously to see if their captain can fully recover.
