Shibu Soren, a well-known political leader from Jharkhand, passed away at the age of 81. He was being treated at Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for more than a month and had been in serious condition for several days. Soren was a Rajya Sabha MP, former Union Minister, and a three-time Chief Minister of Jharkhand. He was also one of the founding members of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party.

Shibu Soren’s Life and Health

  • Soren died peacefully on August 4, 2025, with his family beside him.

  • He was admitted to the hospital on June 19 and was under the care of kidney specialist Dr. A.K. Bhalla.

  • His son, Hemant Soren, the current Chief Minister of Jharkhand, shared the sad news on social media, saying, “I lost everything today.”

A Long Political Journey

Shibu Soren had a political career that lasted more than 40 years. He was:

  • Elected to Lok Sabha eight times

  • Served in Rajya Sabha for two terms

  • Part of many important political decisions in Jharkhand and at the national level

He was born in Ramgarh, then part of Bihar, and belonged to the Santhal tribal community. In 1972, he co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) to fight for the rights of tribal people and the creation of a separate state—Jharkhand, which was finally formed in 2000.

His Role as Chief Minister and Union Minister

Shibu Soren became Jharkhand’s Chief Minister three times, but none of the terms lasted a full term due to political instability.

  • In 2005, his first term ended in just nine days.

  • In later years, coalition issues kept pulling down his governments.

  • He also held the position of Union Coal Minister in 2004 and again in 2006.

However, his political journey wasn’t without controversy. He was convicted in the murder case of his former secretary Shashinath Jha in 2006. This made him the first Union Minister ever convicted in a murder case, although he was later cleared by the Delhi High Court.

Shibu Soren’s Legacy

Soren was a strong voice for tribal communities, the poor, and underprivileged people.

  • His contributions helped shape tribal rights and brought national attention to their issues.

  • Despite the ups and downs, many still see him as a symbol of tribal empowerment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him a “grassroots leader” and praised his lifelong efforts for the tribal population. Modi also expressed condolences to the Soren family.

Family and Political Impact

Shibu Soren is survived by his wife Roopi, sons Hemant and Basant, and daughter Anjali. His elder son Durga Soren passed away in 2009. Hemant Soren, apart from being the current Chief Minister, recently became the JMM party president, while Basant is also an elected MLA.

This Breaking News marks the end of an era in Indian and Jharkhand politics. Shibu Soren’s legacy will continue through his family and the political party he helped build. His life was filled with struggle, leadership, controversy, and a deep commitment to his community.
