The race for the Mumbai mayor’s post has once again brought back familiar scenes of Maharashtra politics — luxury hotels, tight numbers, and sharp political statements. After the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde narrowly crossed the majority mark in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, political activity in the state has intensified.

At the centre of the developments is Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who late Sunday night met 29 newly elected corporators from his party. The meeting took place at Taj Land’s End hotel in Bandra, a move that has quickly drawn criticism from opposition parties and sparked a fresh political row.

A Familiar Political Script Returns

The BMC, India’s richest municipal body, has often seen intense power struggles. This time is no different. With the BJP–Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) alliance, also known as the Mahayuti, winning just a few seats above the majority mark, every corporator has become crucial.

The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, while the Shinde-led Shiv Sena won 29 seats, taking the alliance total to 118 in a House of 227 members. The halfway mark is 114, which means the ruling alliance has only a four-seat cushion.

This thin margin explains why political leaders are leaving nothing to chance.

Why Are Corporators Staying at a Luxury Hotel?

According to leaders from the Shinde faction, the hotel stay is meant to be a three-day orientation programme for first-time corporators. Out of the 29 elected representatives, 20 are new faces, and party leaders say they are being briefed on civic administration before formal registration with the Konkan divisional commissioner.

However, opposition leaders are not convinced by this explanation.

Privately, even some leaders from the ruling camp admit that the hotel stay also serves another purpose — preventing last-minute defections or poaching. With numbers so close, even one or two corporators switching sides could change the final outcome of the mayoral election.

Opposition Cries ‘Bargaining’ and ‘Captivity’

The opposition Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) has strongly criticised the hotel meeting. Senior leader Sanjay Raut accused the ruling alliance of holding corporators “hostage” and sarcastically described the Taj hotel as a “jail”.

Raut claimed that despite being deputy chief minister, Eknath Shinde is worried about losing control over his corporators. He demanded that they be “released,” alleging that negotiations over the mayor’s post were happening behind closed doors.

These remarks quickly became part of Breaking News coverage, adding more drama to the mayoral race.

Shinde Hits Back, Turns the Tables

Eknath Shinde dismissed the opposition’s claims, saying his party is confident and fearless. He rejected the idea that corporators were under pressure and instead suggested that opposition parties should worry about their own members.

State Industry Minister Uday Samant echoed Shinde’s comments, hinting that cross-voting or abstentions from the opposition camp could still surprise everyone on voting day.

Such statements have only increased speculation, keeping the story in the Daily news highlights across political platforms.

Understanding the Mayor Numbers Game

In the BMC, the mayor is elected directly by corporators. While the Mahayuti alliance has the numbers on paper, the small margin makes the situation delicate.

Opposition parties argue that if they had fought as a fully united front — including Sena (UBT), Congress, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), and smaller parties — the gap would have been much narrower.

However, even a combined opposition currently falls short of the majority, though not by a large number. This reality has kept political tension high and fuelled continuous discussions and meetings.

 BJP’s Quiet Review After Results

Within the BJP, there is a sense of quiet self-examination. The party had aimed for a stronger performance and hoped to come closer to a clear majority on its own.

Leaders have cited several reasons for the lower-than-expected tally:

  • Coordination issues with alliance partners
  • Candidate selection challenges
  • Strong local identity appeals like the “Marathi manoos” narrative used by rivals

Despite these issues, the BJP remains confident of leading the civic body with alliance support.

Symbolism and the Sena Legacy Factor

The Shinde-led Shiv Sena has stressed the symbolic importance of the mayor’s post, especially with the birth centenary year of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray approaching. Party insiders say this gives them a moral claim to the top civic position in Mumbai.

This emotional and historical argument has added another layer to the political contest.

Uddhav Thackeray Leaves Room for Surprise

Although his party has lost control of the BMC, Uddhav Thackeray has not fully closed the door on hope. He remarked that his party could still get the mayor’s post “if God is willing.”

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis responded with a light-hearted comment, jokingly asking whether “Deva” referred to him or a higher power. The exchange grabbed attention and quickly became viral political content online.

What Lies Ahead for Mumbai’s Civic Politics?

For now, the numbers favour the BJP–Shinde Sena alliance. But Maharashtra politics is known for sudden twists, and the mayoral vote is still awaited.

With corporators closely guarded, opposition attacks growing sharper, and alliances under pressure, the coming days promise high political drama.

As Mumbai prepares to get its next “first citizen” after a long gap, the city watches closely — because in BMC politics, nothing is final until the last vote is cast.
