The political temperature in Bihar is rising as the March 16 Rajya Sabha elections come closer. In the Latest News from Patna, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) looks comfortable in winning four out of the five seats. However, the real drama is around the fifth seat. This is where smaller parties like All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) could become kingmakers.
This political battle has quickly turned into Breaking News, as both the NDA and the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan are working hard to secure enough votes.
The Numbers Behind the Contest
The Bihar Assembly has 243 members. To win one Rajya Sabha seat, a candidate needs 41 votes.
- The NDA currently has 202 MLAs.
- This number makes it easy for the alliance to win four seats without much trouble.
- However, for the fifth seat, the NDA is short by just three votes.
On the other side:
- The RJD-led Mahagathbandhan has only 35 MLAs.
- It needs at least six more votes to win even one seat.
This tight math has made the fifth seat very important. The five MLAs of AIMIM and the lone MLA of BSP now hold the key. Their support can change the final result.
Why AIMIM and BSP Matter So Much
The five AIMIM MLAs are led by party chief Asaduddin Owaisi in Bihar politics. The party currently has no member in the Rajya Sabha. Because of this, AIMIM is demanding respect and representation.
AIMIM’s Bihar president Akhtarul Iman has clearly said that the party wants to field its own candidate for the Rajya Sabha. According to him:
- AIMIM has five MLAs and deserves representation in the Upper House.
- The party wants support from other Opposition groups.
- It is ready to negotiate but wants serious talks.
In another sharp political statement, AIMIM leaders even said that if RJD wants their support, its leader Tejashwi Yadav should personally approach them. This shows that AIMIM is not willing to give support easily.
Meanwhile, the BSP’s only MLA, Satish Yadav, has said he is waiting for instructions from the party’s top leadership. Even one vote can make a big difference in such a close contest.
RJD’s Strategy and Hopes
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is leading the Mahagathbandhan alliance. Within the alliance:
- RJD has 25 MLAs.
- Congress has 6 MLAs.
- CPI (ML), CPM, and Indian Inclusive Party together have 4 MLAs.
Together, they reach 35 MLAs. They need six more votes to secure a seat.
RJD leaders have argued that the NDA should leave one seat for the Opposition. They have also claimed that some NDA MLAs are unhappy with the government and may cross-vote.
Cross-voting, if it happens, could completely change the result. This possibility has added more suspense to the election.
NDA’s Position and Confidence
The NDA, which includes BJP and JD(U), appears confident. With 202 MLAs, winning four seats seems almost certain. The focus is now fully on securing the remaining three votes needed for the fifth seat.
Sources suggest that the NDA is trying to talk to smaller parties and independent MLAs. The alliance knows that even a small shift in numbers can decide the outcome.
In the current political climate, alliances are not just about ideology but also about negotiation and bargaining power.
Key Demands and Political Bargaining
AIMIM has placed clear conditions for support. It has demanded:
- A Seemanchal Development Board.
- A special economic package for the Seemanchal region.
- Development projects in constituencies where AIMIM MLAs were elected.
The party has also said it will not support a BJP candidate. However, it may consider supporting a JD(U) candidate if its demands are accepted.
This shows that the fifth seat is not just about numbers but also about regional development and political recognition.
Bigger Political Impact
This Rajya Sabha election may look small, but it has big political meaning.
- Strength in Parliament:
Every Rajya Sabha seat strengthens a party’s position in national politics.
- Alliance Stability:
The outcome may affect relations within both NDA and Mahagathbandhan. - Future Elections:
The way smaller parties are treated now could impact future Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. - Message to Voters:
Winning or losing the fifth seat will send a political message ahead of bigger electoral battles.
