As Border 2 moves closer to its theatrical release on January 23, the film is already creating strong emotions among fans. A big reason for this excitement is nostalgia. The original Border (1997) is remembered not only as a patriotic blockbuster but also as a film that deeply touched people’s hearts with its powerful dialogues and unforgettable music.
Even after nearly 30 years, songs like “Sandese Aate Hain” and “Ae Jaate Hue Lamhon” remain emotional favourites. These songs are still played on national occasions, family gatherings, and patriotic events. Because of this strong emotional connection, the makers of Border 2 decided to bring these songs back for the sequel—but with a modern touch.
However, this decision has also sparked debate, especially after veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar openly shared why he refused to be part of the project.
Javed Akhtar Refuses to Rewrite His Own Songs
Javed Akhtar, who originally wrote the lyrics for the iconic songs in Border, recently revealed that he was approached by the makers of Border 2. They wanted him to update or slightly change the lyrics to suit the new film’s storyline.
But Akhtar clearly declined the offer.
Speaking in an interview, he said that reusing old songs with small changes shows a lack of originality. According to him, filmmakers should either create completely new songs or accept that repeating the same magic is not always possible.
He described this trend as “creative and intellectual bankruptcy”, explaining that if an old song worked well once, changing a few lines and presenting it again does not add real value.

Why the Makers Felt These Songs Were Essential
Producer Bhushan Kumar later explained why the team felt it was important to keep Sandese Aate Hain in the sequel.
According to him, Border 2 could not exist without three key elements:
- The title Border
- Sunny Deol, who represents the soul of the franchise
- And the song Sandese Aate Hain
Bhushan Kumar said that the sequel is not a direct remake of the first film. Instead, it tells new stories of different soldiers connected to the 1971 war. Because the situations and characters are different, the lyrics also needed to reflect new emotions and experiences.
That is why lyricist Manoj Muntashir was brought in to write fresh lyrics while keeping the emotional core alive.
New Versions of Old Songs: What’s Changed?
In Border 2, the song Sandese Aate Hain has been reintroduced under a new title, “Ghar Kab Aaoge”. This version includes a powerful mix of voices from today’s top singers:
- Sonu Nigam
- Arijit Singh
- Diljit Dosanjh
- Vishal Mishra
The aim was to blend nostalgia with modern musical styles so that both older audiences and younger viewers can connect with the song.
Similarly, Ae Jaate Hue Lamhon has also been recreated. This time, Vishal Mishra joins original singer Roop Kumar Rathod, adding a fresh emotional layer while respecting the original tune.
