European leaders are warning that this moment is extremely important for Ukraine. They say Europe must increase its support and put more pressure on Russia to help end the long and painful war. This message became stronger after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in London.

The leaders met to discuss a new version of a peace plan that was prepared by Ukrainian and US officials last week. But they agreed that more work is needed, and they must also secure strong safety guarantees for Ukraine.

This comes at a time when the US is pushing Ukraine to agree to a peace deal quickly, even though some points of the deal are still controversial.

Ukraine Shares New Peace Plan With the US

President Zelensky said that Ukraine will provide a revised peace plan to the US. He explained that Ukraine spent several days discussing the plan with American officials in Florida. Ukrainian leaders tried to remove proposals that they believe were unfair or helpful to Russia.

Key points Zelensky shared:

  • Some anti-Ukraine parts of the earlier deal were removed
  • However, major disagreements still exist
  • The biggest problem is about territory and what Ukraine should or should not give up

Zelensky made it clear that he will not accept any peace plan that rewards Russia for invading and encourages future attacks.

European Leaders Feel the Pressure

European countries are caught in a difficult position. They want to fully support Ukraine but also need to keep the United States involved. Some American suggestions have made European officials uncomfortable.

Europe’s main concerns:

  • The US wants Ukraine to remove troops from eastern areas
  • In exchange, Russia would withdraw from other places
  • Ukraine fears giving Russia a strong permanent foothold
  • Security guarantees are still not fully agreed upon

A UK spokesperson said all leaders agreed that “now is a critical moment” and Europe must increase support and raise economic pressure on Vladimir Putin.

French and German leaders also said they will work harder to create strong and lasting security guarantees for Ukraine.

US, Russia, and Ukraine Negotiations Still Difficult

There have been many meetings, but still no major breakthrough. A recent five-hour discussion in Moscow between the US envoy and Russian President Vladimir Putin ended with very little progress. Afterwards, Ukraine and US teams met again in Miami, but the results were still unclear.

Adding to the tension, former US President Donald Trump said he was “disappointed” that Zelensky had not read the new peace proposal yet. Zelensky said he expected a full briefing soon because some matters must be discussed face-to-face for safety reasons.

Major sticking points:

  • Russia wants Ukraine to stay out of NATO
  • Russia wants full control of Donetsk and Luhansk
  • Ukraine wants strong security guarantees
  • The US wants a fast agreement
  • Europe wants a fair and long-term solution
War Continues on the Ground

While leaders talk, the fighting goes on. Between Sunday and Monday, 10 people were killed and 47 injured in Russian attacks across nine Ukrainian regions. Drones, missiles, and glide bombs were used in the overnight strikes.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022, thousands of civilians and soldiers have died. Many Ukrainian cities continue to face nightly air attacks with no sign of them stopping soon.

The fate of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is also a big issue. US officials said it remains one of the most sensitive points in all negotiations because Russia still controls it.

Europe Wants a Role in Shaping the Peace

European allies fear that a US-led peace deal might ignore Europe’s long-term security needs. They are worried that a quick peace deal, made just to end the conflict fast, might create bigger problems in the future.

Why Europe wants to stay involved:

  • They share borders closer to Russia
  • European security depends on Ukraine’s future
  • Europe wants Russia to face real consequences
  • Allies want a “just and lasting peace,” not just a temporary pause

Zelensky said Ukraine cannot succeed without the help of both the US and Europe. He called this a team effort where tough decisions must be made.
