In a new Bloomberg interview held in downtown San Francisco on Wednesday night, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said that artificial intelligence (AI) will not take away most jobs at Google. Instead, he said that AI will help the company grow, and may even lead to more job opportunities in the future.

AI Will Not Replace Workers

Many people are worried that AI could replace human workers. Some fear that half of Alphabet’s 180,000 employees could lose their jobs. But Pichai disagrees. He said that AI is an “accelerator”, not a job killer. According to him, AI helps engineers do their work faster and better by removing boring and repetitive tasks. This allows them to focus on more important and creative jobs.

“I expect we will grow from our current engineering phase even into next year because it allows us to do more,” said Pichai.

This statement comes during a time when Alphabet has already cut jobs in the past two years. But in 2025, the job cuts have been smaller and more focused.

Layoffs Have Been More Targeted in 2025

In recent years, Alphabet has laid off thousands of workers. In 2023, the company let go of 12,000 employees. In 2024, at least another 1,000 lost their jobs. But so far in 2025, the layoffs have been much smaller. Earlier this year, less than 100 people were let go from Google Cloud, and later, a few hundred from its platforms and devices division.

Pichai said these job cuts are part of adjusting the business to new technologies. He believes AI will bring more new products and services, which means more people will be needed, not fewer.

New Areas of Growth for Alphabet

Pichai also spoke about Alphabet’s exciting new ventures, including:

  • Waymo, the company’s self-driving car project

  • Quantum computing, which could be the future of super-fast technology

  • YouTube, which continues to grow rapidly, especially in countries like India

He said YouTube now has 100 million channels in India, with 15,000 channels having over a million subscribers. This shows that there are still many growth opportunities for Alphabet around the world.

AI Fears Are Valid But Should Be Discussed

Even though Pichai is positive about AI, he said it is important to talk about people’s fears. When asked about recent comments from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who warned that AI could take over half of all entry-level white-collar jobs in five years, Pichai said:

“I respect that. I think it’s important to voice those concerns and debate them.”

He agrees that it’s important to think about how AI might affect people and their jobs, even if we don’t have all the answers yet.

The Future of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

At the end of the interview, Pichai was asked if Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)—AI that is as smart as a human—will ever be possible. He said it’s hard to predict.

“Are we currently on an absolute path to AGI? I don’t think anyone can say for sure,” he said.

But he also said he is very hopeful and believes that we will continue to see big progress in AI.
