Daily news highlights show that the Labour Party in the UK is facing strong pressure from its own Muslim members. Many Muslim Labour MPs, councillors, and mayors are unhappy with how Labour leader Keir Starmer is handling the Gaza conflict. They believe the party is not doing enough to support the people of Palestine.

1. Most Muslim Labour Officials Want Stronger Action

According to a new survey by the Labour Muslim Network (LMN):

  • 77% of Muslim Labour representatives want the UK to stop all arms exports to Israel.

  • 84% support placing sanctions on the Israeli government.

  • A large majority, 97%, want the UK to immediately recognize Palestine as a state.

The survey was conducted between April 2 and May 16, and 221 out of 477 eligible Labour Muslim MPs, councillors, and mayors took part. The results reveal deep dissatisfaction within the party on the issue of Gaza and UK foreign policy.

2. Gaza Conflict Creating Tension Within Labour

Keir Starmer recently told Parliament that Gaza is going through “dark days”. He said he is thinking about taking more action. Last month, the UK government suspended trade talks with Israel and imposed sanctions on some Israeli settlers in the West Bank.

However, pressure is growing on the government to go further. Many campaigners and countries are urging the UK to officially recognize Palestine. Over 140 UN nations, including Spain, Norway, and Ireland, already recognize Palestine.

Labour has promised to support a two-state solution, but many feel the party is moving too slowly. Ministers are also thinking about sanctioning two far-right Israeli politicians: Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir.

3. UK Arms Exports Under Review

Another major issue is the export of weapons to Israel. While less than 1% of Israel’s defense imports come from the UK, campaigners argue that even this support is harmful.

The UK government suspended 30 arms export licenses out of 350 last autumn. There’s now a legal challenge underway. Human rights groups claim that some parts sold by the UK for F-35 fighter jets might be used in attacks that break international law in Gaza.

4. Impact on Labour’s Popularity Among Muslims

The war in Gaza has hurt Labour’s support in areas with large Muslim populations. In recent elections, independent pro-Gaza candidates beat Labour in places like Dewsbury and Batley, Blackburn, Birmingham Perry Barr, and Leicester South.

In a past interview, Starmer seemed to say that Israel had the right to cut water and electricity to Gaza. This led to widespread criticism and made many British Muslims feel ignored by the party.

The LMN survey shows:

  • 58% of Muslim Labour reps think the government has done a bad job representing British Muslims.

  • 66% believe that Muslim representatives are not treated equally in the Labour Party.

  • About one-third have experienced Islamophobia personally.

  • More than half believe the party does not take Islamophobia seriously.

5. Call for Justice and Equality

The Labour Muslim Network said the survey is a strong “call to action”. They want the party to show a real commitment to fairness and justice.

“Labour cannot say it is an anti-racist party while ignoring the voices of its own Muslim members,” said an LMN spokesperson.

A Labour Party spokesperson has not yet given a full response.
