1. What Did the Study Find?

A large study using data from the Nurses’ Health Study, which followed over 47,000 women for more than 30 years, found that:

  • Women who drank regular caffeinated coffee had a higher chance of healthy aging.
  • Healthy aging means living past 70 without major diseases, memory loss, or physical problems.
  • Each extra cup of coffee per day gave women about a 2% better chance of aging in a healthy way.

This research looked at women who drank different kinds of drinks, including regular and decaf coffee, tea, and cola. It showed that caffeinated coffee helped, while cola drinks made things worse.

Researchers think the benefits of coffee come from its caffeine and antioxidants. These can support:

  • Better brain function
  • Lower inflammation
  • Protection against diseases like type 2 diabetes and Parkinson’s disease

One study author, Dr. Sara Mahdavi, explained that while the benefits are modest, they are still important for long-term health. However, these results were seen mostly in white women, and more studies are needed for other groups.

Over the years, researchers have found that coffee may help with:

  • Liver health: Lower risk of liver cancer and chronic liver disease
  • Heart health: Lower risk of heart disease when drinking 3-5 cups daily
  • Weight loss: Some studies suggest coffee may help reduce weight and fat

Coffee also has nutrients like vitamin B2, magnesium, potassium, and helpful compounds called phenols.

Dr. Sherry Ross, a women’s health expert, said that drinking coffee in moderation can be a good part of a healthy lifestyle. But she also warned that sugary drinks like cola are harmful and can lower the chances of aging well.
